Home How to perform SWL
How to Perform ESWL is a practical, fundamentals-based course designed for ESWL operators, including physicians, technicians, and clinical users involved in shock wave lithotripsy procedures.
This course provides a structured step-by-step approach to performing extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy safely, accurately, and effectively. It focuses on the complete operator workflow, from pre-procedure preparation to patient positioning, stone targeting, acoustic coupling, energy ramping, shock wave frequency, treatment monitoring, and post-treatment technical checks.
Rather than teaching ESWL as a simple shock delivery procedure, this course presents it as a controlled clinical and technical process. Learners will understand why successful ESWL depends on correct patient preparation, accurate stone localization, proper alignment in two X-ray axes, good coupling, gradual energy ramping, appropriate frequency selection, and continuous monitoring throughout the session.
Special emphasis is placed on practical operator decisions, including how to manage stone movement during respiration, when to use abdominal compression, how to avoid common alignment mistakes, how to recognize poor coupling, when to pause or adjust treatment, and why ramping is the backbone of successful ESWL.
This course is device-neutral and focuses on core ESWL principles rather than brand-specific operation. Operators must always follow the official instructions for use, institutional protocols, and manufacturer-specific training for the lithotripter system used in their clinical practice.
By the end of this course, learners will have a clearer understanding of how to perform ESWL as a structured, precise, and patient-focused procedure, with the goal of improving treatment quality, safety, and outcomes.
On successful completion, you will receive an official Lithotripsy Academy certificate confirming foundational
Lithotripsy Academy is a dedicated educational platform focused on advancing knowledge and clinical practice in shockwave lithotripsy and urolithiasis management.
All courses on this platform are conceptualized, structured, and designed by Dr. Sameer Parmar, with over two decades of experience in shockwave lithotripsy. His work is centered on translating clinical experience, scientific evidence, and real-world practice into structured, practical learning.
Select courses are further enriched through collaboration with invited international faculty, bringing diverse clinical perspectives and global expertise into the learning experience.
Each course reflects a carefully curated blend of evidence-based guidelines and expert clinical insight, ensuring that learners gain not only knowledge, but also a deeper understanding of decision-making in real-world practice.
