Home How to Optimise Ultrasound
Ultrasound is one of the most valuable imaging tools in shock wave lithotripsy. It allows real-time stone localisation, continuous monitoring during treatment, and radiation-free image guidance. However, effective ultrasound-guided SWL requires more than simply placing a probe on the patient. It requires an understanding of ultrasound physics, image orientation, probe handling, acoustic windows, artefacts, and practical image optimisation.
This course introduces the essential principles of ultrasound imaging with a specific focus on its application in lithotripsy. Learners will understand how ultrasound images are created, how kidney stones appear on ultrasound, how to improve image quality, and how to optimise patient positioning and probe handling for accurate stone targeting.
The course is designed to bridge the gap between basic ultrasound theory and practical SWL application. It explains key concepts such as frequency, depth, gain, focus, acoustic shadowing, respiratory movement, coupling quality, and image interpretation in a clear and clinically relevant way.
By the end of this course, learners will be better prepared to use ultrasound confidently during SWL procedures, improve stone visibility, reduce targeting errors, and support safer, more precise treatment.
Lithotripsy Academy is a dedicated educational platform focused on advancing knowledge and clinical practice in shockwave lithotripsy and urolithiasis management.
All courses on this platform are conceptualized, structured, and designed by Dr. Sameer Parmar, with over two decades of experience in shockwave lithotripsy. His work is centered on translating clinical experience, scientific evidence, and real-world practice into structured, practical learning.
Select courses are further enriched through collaboration with invited international faculty, bringing diverse clinical perspectives and global expertise into the learning experience.
Each course reflects a carefully curated blend of evidence-based guidelines and expert clinical insight, ensuring that learners gain not only knowledge, but also a deeper understanding of decision-making in real-world practice.
